Now that summer is coming to an end that doesn’t mean that my family is ready to give up those campfire and grill foods that we’ve grown to love. One of my families favorites is steak with onions.
In order to convert this to a crock pot recipe, all I did was
- Purchase a more fatty cut of meat. Meats that have more connective tissue and fat are MADE for the crock pot. AND
- Put my onions underneath the meat.
This was the perfect dinner that reminded us all of the great outdoor adventures we’d had throughout the summer. Here is how I made the crock pot steak with onions:
- (2) 1 1/2 pound beef chuck steaks, about 1 – 1 1/2 inches in thickness
- 4 onions, peeled and left whole
- favorite steak seasoning
Wrap the onions individually in pieces of aluminum foil. I added no butter or seasonings of any kind (I guess I’m a purist when it comes to onions), but you could if you wanted to. Place the onions in the bottom of a 4 – 6 quart crock pot making sure that none are touching. Now balance the seasoned steaks, folded in half, on top of the onions. I put one folded steak onto two onions. Place the lid on and cook on high for 4 1/2 – 5 hours or on low for 8 – 9 hours.
Once the steaks are done they will look like the picture to the left. They are a beautiful golden color. The onions should feel soft through the foil. This will indicate they are done as well.
Remove the steaks and place them on plates to be resting. You’ll also want to remove the onions and place them in a bowl. When you start unwrapping them there will be lots of liquid (’cause I’m told onions are mostly water) and the bowl will catch it.
Unfold the steaks and cut in half (I just cut where the fold was) and serve with onions and choice of side. These were very moist, not dried out at all. I will definitely be doing this affordable dinner again!
Oh yeah, this serves 4 people easily. We even had leftovers that I made steak and egg burritos for breakfast the next morning.
That’s your crock pot steak ‘n onion dinner. Super easy and super delicious :o)

This is the perfect crock pot meal that makes you not miss the summertime grilled foods so much. Super easy and super delicious.

I made this several years ago. It turned out great, but I moved and lost track of it. This past year, I have been using my slow cooker again, and searched for the recipe, but couldn’t find it. It recently showed up in my facebook memories. I can’t wait to make it again! Thanks!
