Cinnamon Apples

This week will be filled with all kinds of apple recipes – IN THE CROCK POT! Even though we had the good ole first apple dish of the season this morning for breakfast (a.k.a. applesauce) we’re gonna venture out and do some different apple recipes in the crock pot this year. I’m starting with crock pot cinnamon apples. It’s like a candy apple, but you don’t have to worry about breaking your teeth. And let’s face it, it just reminds us of carnivals and fall festivals.
Here is how I do it:
Peel, core and chop apples (I just use whatever kind of apple I have on hand, this time it was granny smith, but whatever you have will work). There is no certain amount because it will depend on the size of crock pot you’re using. This time I went big… I pulled out the 6 quart. In the bottom of the crock pot put a stick (or 1/2 cup) of butter and turn on low. When the butter is melted add the apples and toss to coat with butter. Now the fun part…. add two 9 ounce bags of cinnamon imperials candies (or Red Hots). Toss to coat. It will look like your apples are coming down with chicken pox……. but no need to worry, when you put the lid on they will start to melt down.  Cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours stirring every once in a while. Now go and enjoy your mock candy apple with a fork! *NOTE* If using a 2 or 3 quart crock pot only use 1/2 a stick (or 1/4 cup) of butter. You can also cut the candies down to one bag for a smaller crock pot as well.
